 Negations

To form a negative sentence, you can add the words "kein-" and "nicht".

That is not a/an…

Das ist kein Apfel. (der Apfel - apple)

Das ist keine Birne. (die Birne - pear)

Das ist kein Ei. (das Ei - egg)

Did you notice that in the sentences above, we use the word "kein" to say something is not something. 

You use the word "kein" if the word it follows is a noun.  Look at more examples below.

Das ist keine Tomate.

Das ist keine Kiwi.

Das ist kein Kuchen.

Das ist kein Würstchen.

Das ist keine Banane.

Did you notice that "kein" also has different endings? Kein is also conjugated. 

Remember, conjugation is when we change the ending based on the number (singular or plural), gender (male, female, neutral) and case (nominative, dative,accusative, genitive).

If it is not a noun, you have to use the word "nicht". See the examples below. 

Das ist nicht gut.

That is not good.

Das ist nicht groß.

That is not big.

Ich kann nicht rennen.

I cannot run.

Ich kann nicht gehen.

I cannot go.

Das ist nicht mein Apfel.

That is not my apple.

Das ist nicht meine Tasche.

That is not my bag.

Das ist nicht mein Buch.

That is not my book.
